What to do After the Spillage is Cleaned up?

After the clean-up, remember that used absorbents and contaminated PPE may have the same hazardous properties as the spilled substance.

Manage Contaminated Waste

  • Place used absorbents, disposable coveralls, gloves and other contaminated items into the correct hazardous-waste container.

  • Seal and label the container clearly.

  • Dispose of the waste through the approved hazardous-waste process.

Decontaminate Reusable Equipment

  • Clean reusable tools and PPE, such as brooms, scoops and boots, using the method stated in the Safety Data Sheet or workplace procedure.

  • Do not use water if the chemical may react with it.

  • Inspect all equipment before returning it to storage.

Report and Record the Incident

  • Report the spill and clean-up to your supervisor, manager or HSE representative.

  • Record the substance, quantity, location, cause, people involved and actions taken.

  • Record all spills, including minor spills and near misses.

Review and Prevent Recurrence

  • Identify why the spill occurred.

  • Check whether containers, hoses, valves, storage arrangements or work practices need improvement.

  • Complete any required corrective actions.

Restock the Spill Kit

Replace all used absorbents, PPE, waste bags, labels and other spill-response supplies immediately.
