Safely Containing the Spillage

Only take these actions if you are trained, authorised and can do so without putting yourself at risk.

  • Close the valve.
  • Shut down the pump or equipment.
  • Temporarily seal or clamp a leaking hose.
  • Reposition an upright leaking container.
  • Place the damaged container into a suitable secondary container.
  • Build an absorbent barrier around the spill.
  • Use spill socks, booms or absorbent granules.
  • Create a controlled flow path away from drains or sensitive areas.
  • Cover nearby drains using drain mats or suitable barriers.
  • Use absorbent pads or cushions to collect the main body of the spill.
