- Raise the alarm and isolate the area.
Keep unnecessary personnel away from the spill.
- Eliminate ignition sources.
Stop flames, hot work, smoking and electrical equipment only when safe to do so.
- Wear the correct PPE.
Use the PPE specified in the Safety Data Sheet and spill-response procedure.
- Improve ventilation where safe.
Prevent vapour accumulation without operating equipment that could create a spark.
- Contain the spill.
Place compatible chemical spill pads or absorbent socks around the outside edge.
- Absorb the liquid.
Cover the spill with suitable pads and add more until no free liquid remains.
- Collect the contaminated materials.
Use suitable non-sparking tools and place used absorbents and disposable PPE into an approved waste container.
- Seal, label and report.
Label the container as flammable hazardous spill waste and arrange disposal through an approved waste contractor.
Important Precautions
- Do not use ordinary paper towels unless specifically approved for the chemical.
- Do not switch electrical equipment on or off inside a vapour-contaminated area.
- Do not use water unless the Safety Data Sheet confirms it is suitable.
- Evacuate immediately if vapour is strong, the spill is spreading or there is a fire or explosion risk.
