Safely Using the Absorbent

Use only absorbent materials that are suitable for the spilled chemical and provided in the designated spill kit.
Applying the Absorbent
-
Place absorbent around the outside edge of the spill first.
-
Work gradually towards the centre to prevent further spreading.
-
Cover the entire contaminated area.
-
Allow enough time for the liquid to be fully absorbed.
-
Add more absorbent if liquid is still visible.
Do not mix incompatible absorbents or use materials that may react with the chemical.
Collecting the Spill Debris
Once the liquid has been absorbed:
-
Use a brush, scoop or non-sparking tool, where required.
-
Place the contaminated absorbent into the designated waste container.
-
Collect used pads, gloves, disposable PPE and other contaminated materials.
-
Do not return used absorbent to the spill kit.
Avoid using your hands to collect contaminated material.
Labelling and Disposal
-
Seal the waste container securely.
-
Complete the hazardous waste label.
-
Identify the contents as spill debris and include the chemical name.
-
Record the date, location and other information required by the workplace procedure.
-
Store the container in the designated hazardous-waste area.
Arrange collection and disposal through an approved hazardous-waste contractor.
